It’s almost time for the annual pilgrimage to Mountain Mission School in Grundy, Va. This it the 62nd annual trip by Rush Countians to the school.
“The economy has taken a toll on MMS and they have continually tightened their budget and report that giving is down this year. Hopefully our community will take time to count our blessings and step up and give again this year. Mountain Mission School is an amazing place,” Jerry Kent, one of the local organizers, said. “All of the children there have special problems and special needs and this is a place where their needs are met.”
“The staff is unbelievably dedicated. The school is funded entirely by donations. They do not depend on the government to fund them,” Kent continued. “Not only is this a school but also a home to these children where they are brought up with a deep Christian background. I am proud to have had the chance to be associated with Mountain Mission School, but I am prouder to be associated with a community like ours that cares enough to keep giving and helping a place like MMS. I am confident that our community, churches, businesses and individuals will again rise to the occasion.”
People wanting to drop off items can do so at Fraley Implements, Jackman's Animal Clinic, Buck Creek Veterinary Clinic, Rushville Pharmacy, Odum's Feed Barn, and Pizza King (North and South).
Monetary donations can be taken to any Rush County bank.
“Money will be used to purchase shoes for the children needing them as we have for over 60 years. Additional money will be used for the purchase of washing machines and dryers. All the washing machines and dryers used to care for the 275 plus residents and staff members have been purchased by our local community for many years. It is our hope to raise over $7,000 this year, and with the help of our community this is a very realistic goal,” Kent said.

No used clothing will be taken this year as they have an overabundance of used clothing.
While at MMS this year Rush County citizens making the trip will do work projects, serve the annual milk shakes and banana splits, sponsor the annual balloon launch, decorate for Christmas and spend time with the residents and staff.
Anyone wanting to sponsor a child’s birthday may do so by donating $20, which will allow the child to have a party complete with their own birthday cake and a special gift. Mark your donation and give your name and address.
