Decatur County — Tuesday just before 9:30 p.m. an Indiana State trooper and two Greensburg Police officers were on Interstate 74 observing for a vehicle possibly involved in two armed robberies that occurred earlier in the evening in Dearborn County and a third in Batesville.
At approximately 9:20 p.m. a Greensburg police officer got behind a vehicle believed to have been involved in the three robberies. As they traveled westbound on I-74 another Greensburg officer and the trooper also got behind the suspect vehicle.
Officers attempted to make a traffic stop near Greensburg on I-74. The suspect vehicle exited at SR 3 and continued north. At approximately 9:27 p.m. the suspect vehicle stopped on SR 3 approximately 2 miles north of Greensburg. Shortly after the suspect vehicle stopped officers heard and saw gunfire coming from inside the suspect vehicle and returned fire.
The passenger in the suspect vehicle exited and immediately complied with the officer’s orders and was taken into custody. As officers approached the driver’s side of the vehicle they could see the driver had suffered an apparent gunshot wound. Officers then called EMS and the suspect was transported to Decatur County Memorial Hospital and was later airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
As the investigation continued into the early morning hours Wednesday, it was determined the passenger had not been involved in any of the robberies and was released. The driver, identified as Dustin W. Wise, 27, of Fortville, remains in critical condition at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
The shooting incident is an ongoing investigation.
