GVFD to host Fallen Hero’s Ride

Frank Denzler
Rushville Republican

Volunteers play a vital role in our county. They frequently are the first to respond to the scene of a fire, accident or other emergency situation.

Currently, there are volunteer units in Carthage, Milroy, Raleigh, Glenwood, Posey Township, Rushville Township and Manilla.

Each department has qualified medical and fire personnel who are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. At any given moment a volunteer may be called out of a field or rousted from a sound night’s sleep and asked to offer their assistance to a serious situation.

The Glenwood Volunteer Fire Department has lost three of it members in recent years and in their honor the department will host a “Fallen Hero’s Ride” Oct. 10.

Registration for the event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the fire station, 105 North Main Street, Glenwood with riders departing at 2 p.m.

What separates this ride from most “poker runs” is that rather than make stops at local drinking establishments the ride will touch on the most recent losses to the volunteer department with stops being made where fire department members recently or previously were affiliated.

The first stop will be at the Fayette County Jail to honor former Glenwood fire fighter and Fayette County deputy Dave Kehl, the Brookville Police Department in honor of former officer and fire fighter Ron Zimmermen, followed by a stop at the Rushville Consolidated High School Ag Building and home of the RCHS Chapter of FFA in honor of Kyle Henderson. Riders will then return to the Glenwood fire station for a dinner, silent auction and evening of entertainment.

The cost of the ride is $10 per bike with all proceeds from the event benefiting the Kyle Henderson Scholarship Fund.

All riders are welcome.
