Arlington Boy Scouts Troop 28 departed July 1 from Indianapolis International Airport for Colorado Springs, Colo. Leading The Way Tours Inc. met the troop after arriving in Colorado Springs for a sightseeing tour of the Air Force Academy, Garden of the Gods and a barbecue at the Flying W Ranch. The troop then traveled by coach to Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimarron, N.M.

After a final shake-down of backpacks, gear and equipment the 12-day, 72-mile trek began July 3. The troop purified water and carried its own food and tents. Several campsites on the trail had activities such as burro racing, repelling and rock climbing for the Scouts to enjoy in the evenings. Other campsites were chosen along the trail.

The highlight of the trek was climbing “Old Baldy,” the highest mountain in the Philmont range. Much to one mother’s surprise she received an exciting cell phone call from her son while he was on top of “Old Baldy.” Several Scouts played a game of hacky sac while others enjoyed the beauty of the mountain’s reflection in the lake below and participated in other activities while on the mountain top.

There were many learning experiences along the way.

Troop 28’s itinerary took the Scouts through the North Country and Valle Vidal. In June of 2002 that area experienced the largest fire in New Mexico history. The group learned about many aspects of fire ecology and personally observed the recovery taking place five summers during several summers.

The last day was the most strenuous.

The hike began at 1:30 p.m. Using headlights the goal was to see sunrise at the “Tooth of Time.” After a 12-mile, 10-hour hike on the trail, Troop 28 reached base camp exhausted and proud of its accomplishments after 12 days on the trail.

It has been said, “ Once you experience the Philmont magic, you will want to return.”

One young Scout looked back at the ranch and exclaimed, “I am destined to return!”
