A report of serious injury accident resulted in multiple units responding to the 200 block of South Main Street, Carthage shortly after 2 p.m. Friday.
Medical responders and law enforcement personnel found that a vehicle and a scooter had collided, causing serious injuries to the operator of the motorized scooter. He was identified as Donald F. Kobel, 50, of Carthage.
According to neighbors in the area, Kobel frequently operated his 2005 Yamaha scooter in the area and often failed to stop as he turned northbound on Main Street from Log Street.
According to deputy Mark Click of the RCSD, Jamie D. Davidson, 30, of Rushville, was southbound on Main Street when Kobel pulled on to Main Street from East Log Street and entered her path of travel.
“The driver told me that all of a sudden he was just there in front of her. She had nowhere to go and basically no time prior to the collision,” the deputy said.
The force of the impact ejected Kobel from his scooter and into the windshield of Davidson’s vehicle. The Yamaha scooter came to rest a short distance away.
Kobel was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and sustained a serious facial and head injury. When medial personnel arrived on the scene they found Kobel unresponsive and requested that Air Evac Ambulance be dispatched to the scene.
Following treatment by medical personnel from Knightstown, Carthage and RMH Ambulance, Kobel was air-lifted to Methodist Hospital. The full extent of his injuries remained unknown at press time.
Davidson was uninjured in the accident.
“The investigation is still ongoing at this time; however, at this stage of the investigation it appears that fault was due to unsafe lane movement by Mr. Kobel. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this tragic accident,” Click said.
Responding to the accident were units from the Carthage Volunteer Fire Department, RCSD, RMH Ambulance, Carthage Ambulance, Air Evac and Davis Towing.
