Saturday benefit to aid working mother

Michelle (Combs) Whitfield is not in a position or stage of her life to take too many things for granted. The Rushville woman has a 4-year-old daughter, Shytana, and manages to work three days a week.

That may not seem like a lot until one considers that Whitfield is currently in Stage 5 of renal failure.

Five months ago the woman began dialysis. The treatments are conducted three times a week and last four hours during each session.

According to her friends, Whitfield is a strong-willed mother and individual who rarely seeks assistance from others even during this, her time of need.

Despite her reluctance to seek help, a number of her friends have organized a poker run as a way to raise money needed to help with co-pays, medication, travel expenses for dialysis treatment and every day expenses.

The poker run will leave the Rushville Eagles Lodge, 221 West First Street, shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday. The group will then make stops at nearby Eagles Lodges in Connersville, Brookville, Batesville and Greensburg prior to returning to Rushville for a auction.

According to Larry Tompkins, Rushville Mayor Merv Bostic will also be a part of the festivities and sign a proclamation to that effect prior to the group of motorcycle enthusiasts leaving Rushville.

“This is an opportunity to help someone in their time of need. We are hoping for both good weather and a good turnout,” Tompkins said.

Following a return to the Rushville Eagles Lodge Saturday afternoon dinner will be held followed by an evening of entertainment with Billy Reeves providing DJ and karaoke services.
