The Indiana Student Teacher Achievement Recognition ceremony recently was held and three Rushville Consolidated High School educators were singled out by students they had taught as making a positive difference in their education.
According to RCHS assistant principal Robert C. Hadley, during the ceremony secondary education teachers T.R. Campbell, Keith Perin and Ken Stanley were recognized as recipients of the 2007-2008 I-STAR Awards.
The Indiana Student Teacher Achievement Recognition is a cooperative effort that includes Centerville, Connersville, Franklin County, Hagerstown, Lincoln, Rushville, Tri and Union County High Schools.
The award is open to the top 10 percent of the seniors in each high school. Three seniors are selected from each school based on their application with the focal component of the application being the selection of a teacher, counselor, or administrator who the student believes has made the strongest contribution to the student’s individual and scholastic development.
During the application process the students were required to submit a written explanation of why the educator was selected for this honor.
The RCHS students earning I-STAR awards during the most recent school year were Hillary Cameron, Laura Neuman and Daniel Riddell.
Cameron is the daughter of Ron and Barbara Cameron and chose high school English teacher and head baseball coach Keith Perin.
Neuman, the daughter of Joe and Monica Neuman, selected math teacher Ken Stanley.
Riddell, the son of Jean and Jeff Mauzy and Charles Riddell, selected high school band instructor T.R. Campbell.
According to Hadley, Cameron has proven herself to be one of RCHS’ top students. The senior is currently a member of the National Honor Society, Madrigal Singers and Varsity Scholars. Cameron also served in the Leadership Rush County program during her sophomore and junior years where she successfully completed several workshops.
“Hillary Cameron was also very involved with the library program at RCHS during her junior year and served as a member of Girl Scouts of America and 4-H in past years,” Hadley added.
Besides academics, Cameron won a drama award during her junior year. Following graduation, Cameron plans to attend the University of Las Vegas and major in English in hopes of becoming a high school or college teacher.
Daniel Riddell exhibited many strengths during his four years of high school. He served as drum major for the Roaring Regiment band. He also filled the capacity of vice-president and treasurer for the St. Mary Youth Group and Eucharistic Minister. Riddell was also an active participant in FCA, Cheerblock, Spanish Club and Academic Team during the past four years. Outside of school activities, Riddel was also a Briar Patch Player and volunteered his time to the Relay for Life and ARC Ride-a-Bike. Scholastically, Riddell obtained Varsity Scholar status during each of four years of high school and was an active member of the National Honor Society. Riddell intends to attend Ball State University in the fall and pursue a major in Music Education in hopes of becoming a teacher.
Laura Neuman divided her time between a variety of clubs and organizations during her four years of high school. A stand-out student, Neuman was a member of the National Honor Society and received numerous academic awards during the past four years including being a four-year top 10 member of her graduating class. The soon-to-be graduate was an active volunteer at St. Mary Catholic Church and youth group.
She also volunteered time and energies to the Relay for Life and Right to Life organizations.
