Tractor-trailer spills load of fertilizer

Shortly after 11 a.m. Monday a report of a tractor-trailer rollover accident sent responders from Rush and Shelby County to the 1000 block of South CR 1000W.

Responders found that a Volvo tractor with a fully loaded trailer of fertilizer had left the east side of the county road and lost its load in a nearby field and side ditch.

According to investigating officer deputy Mark Click of the Rush County Sheriff’s Department, the driver, Eric V. Brandt, 35, of Shelbyville, was northbound when he lost control and entered a side ditch and was unable to keep the tractor-trailer upright.

“The driver said that he came upon a herd of three or four deer and in his attempt to avoid a collision swerved and entered the ditch. At that point he was just along for the ride,” Click said.

After rolling onto the driver’s side the vehicle came to rest with the cab partially blocking CR 1000W.

Brandt was uninjured as a result of the accident and the owner of the truck and its contents, William Fisher, arrived from a nearby Shelby County farm shortly before law enforcement personnel had began the cleanup process.

Concerns by Waldron volunteer fire personnel were that diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid from the rolled vehicle was seeping into a nearby drainage ditch.

Nearly three hours after the accident and with the cleanup process complete the vehicle was righted and returned to Fisher’s farm.

Responding to the accident were units from the RCSD, SCSD, WVFD and Davis Towing.
