Farris: Importance of shopping locally

Dear Editor:

RUSHVILLE — Now more than ever as the 2012 holiday shopping season begins, I’d like to remind RUSHVILLE REPUBLICAN readers of the importance in shopping locally this season. Start your shopping with the merchants in Rush County.  Dollars spent in locally owned businesses have a local “recirculation multiplier” – as the money you spend locally gets re-spent locally again, again, again and again. Dollars spent with locally owned stores have an even greater impact than money spent with local chain stores as the profits get re-invested here. And remember, dollars spent over the internet never make it back to your community for any local benefit.

Shopping at a local business is supporting your friends and neighbors, your community, your local and regional economies – and the growth of these sectors impact all of us. Additional benefits of shopping locally for the holidays include:

l Investment in community – monetary and volunteer time reinvestment by local store owners.

l Reduces environment impact – eliminates need for mail order/web shipping materials.

l More choices – local and regional specialty stores offer different and more unique items than chain stores.

l Personalized service.

l See what you’re getting – upon arrival, web and mail orders don’t always meet our expectations.

l Support your local economy – the National Federation of Independent Business states that small businesses make up over 99 percent of all U.S. employers.

l “Make it or break it” time of the year – the holiday season is a period in which the future existence of the local businesses may be determined by holiday sales and profits.

If you cannot find what you are looking for in Rush County, then I encourage you to support your regional neighbors, the many fine businesses and shopping centers in Central Indiana. Regional shopping support has a similar impact of buying locally – and a stronger region makes for stronger communities. So make a great holiday investment this season - shop locally and let the money be re-spent again, again, again and again.

Happy local shopping to all,

Tom Farris
