More on gun foolishness and legitimate concerns

RUSHVILLE — Dear Editor:

There is no end to the things one could write about the gun craze sweeping our formerly sane country. It goes without saying, or should, that a voice of reason will get no hearing in the present gun frenzy, which is unprecedented in the United States.

One item of concern is that of gun safety. I learned gun safety at my father’s knee from toddler age on up. Gun safely is second nature to me. Now I fear that there are thousands (millions?) of new gun owners who have no conception of how to safely handle their new purchases. Many may treat them as toys just like they see on TV shows or electronic games. They may totally fail to comprehend the deadly nature of their new acquisitions. Countless accidents, some fatal, are bound to ensue.

It was somewhat humorous to learn via television that a fellow attending the Indianapolis Gun Show cut the safety tie off a weapon, attempted to load it, and promptly shot himself in the hand. Now multiply that ineptness by a million and consider the outcome. It won’t be pretty. (Loaded guns are forbidden at the show.)

A letter writer to the Greensburg Daily News justified the need for multiple large-capacity magazines as a defense against home intruders. He actually wrote, “By limiting capacity, you’re just further endangering folks who depend on these weapons to protect themselves and their families when they’re most needed. If someone’s violently entered your home, do you want to be the one searching around for another magazine?”

I suggest to that gentleman that if he anticipates a need for multiple clips to defend against home intruders he needs to move to a better neighborhood.

I continue to contend that most of the people are acting like lemmings running off the cliff in buying up all these guns. Most of them won’t know what to do with them, how to handle them, or, in the end, why they even bought them--except, well, that’s what everybody else it doing.

Guns are made to be fired. Many of these novice gun owners will feel an irrepressible urge to shoot them. Let’s hope it’s only at a range or at some remote, uninhabited location.

Best regards,

Norm Voiles

Gun Owner
