RUSHVILLE — As of November 2012, just 8.5 percent of the more than 5,300 U.S. hospitals tracked by HIMSS Analytics had reached Stage 6 on its Electronic Medical Record Adoption ModelSM (EMRAM).  As of November 2012, there are 442 US hospitals that have achieved Stage 6.

HIMSS Analytics announced Rush Memorial Hospital has achieved Stage 6 on the EMR Adoption ModelSM (EMRAM).

HIMSS Analytics developed the EMR Adoption Model in 2005 as a method for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals in the HIMSS Analytics™ Database. Tracking their progress in completing eight stages (0-7), hospitals can review the implementation and utilization of information technology applications with the intent of reaching Stage 7, which represents an advanced electronic patient record environment.

Stage 6 hospitals

l Have made significant executive commitments and investments to reach this stage.

l Have almost fully automated/paperless medical records when they have implemented their IT applications across most of the inpatient care settings.

l Are either starting to evaluate their data for care delivery process improvements or have already documented significant improvements in this area.

l Have begun to create strategic alignments with their medical staff to effectively utilize information technology to improve the patient safety environment

Stage 6 hospitals also have achieved advancement in their IT capabilities toward use criteria in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, claims attachments for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, pay for performance, and government quality reporting programs.

“Stage 6 was achieved by implementing many facets of health information system technology. Rush Memorial Hospital purchased a fully integrated Health Information System (HIS) that would allow other ancillary systems such as radiology, HIE’s, drug dispensing units, and other patient care systems to interact together, thus formulating the ability to produce optimum results to our patients,” said Jim Boyer, RMH Chief Information Officer. “In addition, our employees utilize all the systems functionalities, which brought Rush Memorial Hospital to the HIMSS Level 6 ranking.”

“Rush Memorial Hospital continues to make significant and positive strides in the overall health care delivery system.  Accomplishments like this really set us apart from others,” said Brad Smith, RMH President and CEO.  “Through the on-going commitment and support from our Board of Trustees and the vision of Jim Boyer and his staff in information technology, Rush Memorial has accomplished what few hospitals have done nation-wide. I am proud of the hard work of Jim, his team and all of the other staff who worked hard to get Rush Memorial to this stage. Rush Memorial Hospital’s staff works hard to improve the overall patient experience in our community with everything we do.”

“HIMSS Analytics congratulates Rush Memorial Hospital for leading the way toward health IT adoption,” said John Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, Executive Vice President, Organizational Services, for HIMSS.  “Stage 6 represents a level of sophistication that only 442 US hospitals have reached to date.”

Rush Memorial Hospital is a 25 bed critical access hospital located in Rushville. The hospital employs more than 300 individuals.
