Optimist Club hears about Summer Reading Program

Members of the Rushville Breakfast Optimist Club met at 6:15 a.m. May 13 at Country Cooker Restaurant. Sue Otte from the Rushville Public Library was guest speaker for the day.

Tom Simpson led the group in the pledge and Brian Humphrey gave prayer. Raleigh Cox was more than willing to brag and pay his buck to brag on grandson Cameron, who hit a three-run homer recently in a Little League game playing for the Astros. Tom Simpson was proud to announce he has been assigned to officiate the girls’ track sectional in Franklin County as well as the boys’ track sectional at East Central High School. Shirley Biehl bragged that her oldest son Michael received his R.N. pin Saturday. Ken Rushton bragged that granddaughter Mandy was staying in South Carolina for the summer to take classes and work and she had recently done exceptionally well with her summer position at O’Grady’s.

Shirley provided the joke for the day about the Purina dog chow diet.

Sue Otte shared with the Optimist members that the Summer Reading Program will start May 27 and run through July 19. The Reading 500 — “ The Greatest Spectacle in Books” — is for children of all ages and adults as well. Last year the program had over 600 participants and the Rushville Public Library staff is looking for an even larger number this year. There will be numerous events this summer including crafts and movies, a lock-in for teens, and a hot air balloon in July. At the end of the Summer Reading Program all participants will receive prizes and have a fun celebration with food. Sue also updated the Optimist members on the library’s future plans.
