Wolfsie: Talking trash

“What is this?” Mary Ellen asked me the other day as she dangled a doodad in front of my face. It was small, white, plastic, hexagonal in shape, and had several grooves. “It looks like it goes to something,” she said.

Stuart: Lifting ein stein to Einstein

Today’s column is a toast to Albert Einstein, a subject that No. 1 son (age 24) says, “Even you can’t dumb down.” We’ll see about that.

Greetings, one and all, and welcome! Thanks much for joining me. Mail and other submitted comments have been steady of late so I’ll be brief with my own thoughts. I did, however, want to offer a word of thanks to everyone involved with this year’s Rush County Fair.

Barada: Diabetes increase could be prevented

I heard a disturbing statistic the other day I’d like to pass along to you. Did you know that over 23 million people in the United States have diabetes?

Ward: The good and bad of politics

Politics in Rush County has always been rough and rowdy. I remember my father telling me of the half pint per vote during my youth. I guess the politicians stocked up on half pint bottles of booze prior to the election.

Mauzy: What happened to the lazy days of summer?

In reality, time moves at an even pace. Even so, I recall when people looked forward to the summer season as a time to slow down and take life a little easier. In reality, time moves at an even pace.

Unfortunately I’ve lost track of where this came from, but it’s so profound. It’s called “You could have heard a pin drop.”

Greetings, one and all, and welcome! Mail, in one form or another, remains steady, so I’ll be quiet in order to work in as many submitted comments as possible. It’s time to hear from The Roiling Hundreds (that’s you, the people who read this column).

Wolfsie: Letter perfect

There should be a law. A law against having phone numbers that denote words instead of, well, numbers. Hello! It’s a phone number, not a phone word. I hosted a TV segment last week for a national organization that is dedicated to educating people about a common, but potentially serious, illness. Their phone number spells the name of the disease.

Billieu: Hummingbirds are a true summer delight

I've mentioned loving the summer outdoors before, but one thing warrants repeating — the surge of instant knee-jerk reaction when a hummingbird buzzes my ear.

To look out my window today, one would never guess that we’ve just gone through one of the roughest periods of dangerous weather that we’ve had in years.
