October of 2008 was a pretty exciting time for our area. A little more than a year after breaking ground, Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC (HMIN) opened its doors in Greensburg and began mass production of the Honda Civic Sedan. Eventually adding the Honda Civic Natural Gas and the Acura ILX, this company keeps bringing positive attention to our community.
Limelight is definitely not the only thing HMIN brings to the table. Some of the most crucial additions to our district are the thousands of jobs integrated into our local economy. Contributing to our state-wide job creation is something to be proud of! In August, Indiana ranked 4th in the nation in manufacturing job growth and continues to have the highest percentage of manufacturing jobs as a portion of the private sector in the United States.
Since the low point of unemployment in July 2009, Indiana has added more than 60,000 manufacturing jobs, ranking 2nd in the nation. Companies like HMIN are the reason we continue to grow and expand. The doubling of HMIN’s workforce in 2011 added more than 1,000 jobs in our community, further illustrating our commitment to economic development. People from around the country are seeing expansion like this and are realizing that being a Hoosier has some definite advantages, highlighting our reputation as a state that works.
Just this past session the Legislature passed several bills designed to do one thing – grow jobs in Indiana. Increasing grant funding for employee training, opening doors for veterans to more easily use skills they acquired in the military and cutting taxes to keep businesses and individuals able to function effectively are just a few of the goals the General Assembly reached in 2013. Our pro-jobs outlook has made Indiana the fiscal envy of the nation; something HMIN has had a big part it – especially in our area.
