Public invited to poultry workshop May 11

RUSHVILLE — Many involved in the 4-H poultry program are very excited to see what this fair season brings. In 2009, there were only 15 birds (all chickens) shown at the fair and shown out of homemade cages, Rubbermaid tubs and crates. In 2010, Jason Branson took on the role of poultry superintendent. He knew there would be some growth as the years progressed, but even that first year in this position, entries grew to 109 birds.

“Last year we were so pleased to see that our group had grown to 22 kids across the county showing a wide range of poultry from ducks to turkeys, pigeons to chickens. At the 2012 fair, we had 258 poultry entries. And you may even remember our special exhibit that was pretty colorful, a pink and purple silkie rooster displayed by Jenna Lawler,” Branson says.

Each year, Branson oversees workshops to educate kids about the poultry fancy, nutrition, genetics and showmanship. This year brings a slightly different spin on workshops and invite anyone who has a desire to learn about poultry for sustainable farming, for exhibition shows, or just for the love of the fancy, to join in.

The public is invited to this year’s poultry workshop starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, in the Rush County Fairgrounds Livestock Pavillion. During this time, concessions will be open, a poultry swap will be going on, and a silent auction will be taking place. Then, beginning at 10 a.m. guest speakers will begin presenting on topics of commercial meat and layers, genetics, nutrition, waterfowl and showmanship.

Branson is pleased to announce that Dr. Yuko Sato from Purdue University will be joining in the workshop to discuss the importance of biosecurity practices and much more. This event is open to the public.
