Midwest mint growers will gather Feb. 27-28 in Plymouth to learn about a variety of production and use topics related to this specialty oil crop. The meeting is sponsored by the Office of Agricultural Research at Purdue, Purdue Extension and the Indiana Mint Market Development and Research Council. It will be at Swan Lake Resort, 5203 Plymouth-LaPorte Trail. The program will start with a welcome from Dan Gumz, president of the Indiana Mint Market Development and Research Council. A banquet will be held Feb. 27 with an address by Mike Hoffman, chief meteorologist for WNDU-TV in South Bend. The workshops will wrap up with midday state grower meetings Feb. 28.

Educational talks will be offered both days. Among the topics are the use of new herbicides and insecticides in mint, proper sprayer tank use and maintenance and a marketing update from an oil buyer's perspective. The Illiana Vegetable Growers Symposium, postponed because of storms in January, has been rescheduled for March 4. The program will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST at Teibel's Restaurant, 1175 U.S. 41 in Schererville. Commercial vegetable growers and market farmers can learn about resources and processes to improve their businesses. Speakers will include faculty and Extension educators from Purdue University and the University of Illinois, and representatives from local farms and the Jasper County Soil and Water Conservation District. Participants will learn about neonicotinoid insecticides, managing insects in cucurbits, fertilizer recordkeeping, farm to school, high tunnels, and using sanitizers in post-harvest water. There also will be breakout sessions during which participants can choose a session on either soil health or opportunities with leafy greens and aronia berries. Participants who did not register in advance can register at the door for $25, but they will not be guaranteed lunch. A Purdue University workshop on March 13 will offer guidance on how to start a specialty food business. "An Introduction to Starting a Specialty Food Business" will be held from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Indiana Farm Bureau office at 225 S. East St., Indianapolis. The workshop is for those interested in developing a specialty food or food ingredient business, homemakers and entrepreneurs looking to expand their knowledge on how to run their business, and small farmers interested in "vertically integrating" - uniting all parts of production under one ownership. Topics will consist of food safety, business planning, marketing, organic products, food regulations, product development, process development and packaging. Organizers aim to provide attendees with their next steps in starting a food business. Registration fee of $100 is due March 6. Farmers and other professionals with disabilities can receive training and learn about issues related to disability in agriculture at the 2014 AgrAbility National Training Workshop. The workshop will be held March 31 to April 3 at the Downtown Lexington Hilton, 396 W. Vine St., Lexington, Ky. Participants can attend preconference sessions, breakouts, tours and special events. Participants can also attend a banquet with a benefit auction for farmer and rancher scholarships.

Josh Bleill, a Marine corporal and community spokesperson for the Indianapolis Colts, will give a keynote address. Bleill is a disabled war veteran who was activated for a tour of duty in Iraq in 2006 and lost both of his legs. He is author of a book, One Step at a Time: A Young Marine's Story of Courage, Hope, and a New Life in the NFL. Session topics include beekeeping; aquaponics; agritourism; marketing products; assistive technology for agriculture; veterans in agriculture; women in agriculture care giving; and how to manage and cope with disability.

The Purdue University Department of Forestry and Natural Resources is offering a workshop for those interested in the hardwood industry and want to learn about lumber production, proper handling and use. "Hardwood Lumber: Producing, Using and Selling" will be a one-day workshop from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the following locations: April 2: Purdue University, John S. Wright Conference Center, 1007 N. 725 W., West Lafayette; April 5: City of Elkhart: Elkhart Environmental Center, 1717 E. Lusher Ave., Elkhart; April 9: Southeast Purdue Agricultural Center (SEPAC), 4425 E. C.R. 350 N., Butlerville; April 16: Southern Indiana Purdue Agricultural Center (SIPAC), 11371 E. Purdue Farm Road, Dubois. Workshop topics include wood quality and characteristics, log scaling, hardwood lumber grading and pricing, sawing patterns and grade sawing, determining veneer quality logs, wood moisture and drying, stain and insects, selling and marketing wood products for small and traditional producers. There will also be a sawing demonstration.

The Society of American Foresters has approved the workshop for professional continuing forestry education credits of 6.5 hours. Participants should bring their own lunch. Registration fee is $20.
