Living to serve: FFA community service projects

The last line of the FFA motto, “Living to Serve,” is taken very seriously at the RCHS Ag Building. We take great pride in giving back to our community. Being in FFA is not just about competing in agricultural related competitions or working on a supervised agriculture experience projects. The Rushville FFA Chapter is involved with many community service projects impacting many individuals around Rush County. Many of the events the chapter puts on or participates in are well known.

The most popular event put on by our FFA members is our annual Truck-or-Treat. This event consists of a fun filled night for the children in the community. It provides a safe environment for children around town to come and Trick-or-Treat. It is held in the high school teacher parking lot by the gymnasium. FFA members dress up themselves as well as their trucks or cars and pass out candy.

The Rushville FFA Chapter has many connections with youngsters in our county. The Horticulture classes at the high school grow poinsettia plants and FFA members take these flowers to Center Christian Church. Here, they paint the flowers with preschoolers for whoever these preschoolers decide to give them to. The kids always enjoy this fun art project.

Last year, the chapter got involved with the Salvation Army Bell Ringing and continued to do so this year. Many members stood at Kroger this winter and rang the bell raising money for the Salvation Army. This year District IX put on a food drive and the Rushville FFA Chapter donated 640 non-perishable food items! This was approximately half of the items the whole district collected! We also added a new community service project to our chapter this holiday season where we sponsored a family for Christmas. This family was unable to buy Christmas gifts for their children to open on Christmas morning so the Rushville FFA stepped up and raised $600 to buy the gifts! All of these events are tons of fun and we plan to continue all of these events in years to come.

The Rushville FFA Chapter has participated in and put on many events in the past and continues to do them each and every year. FFA is more than what it seems; it builds character along the way. Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve.
